--------------------------------- START ---------------------------------- Ever since Johan Tufvesson shared a > . . . Midi file of the complete "Sonnerie de St. Genevieve du Mont de Paris" by Marin Marais for violin, viol and continuo" earlier today, I have been playing with it in various ways. First, I played the file in NoteWorthy Player, noting that the shortest note is a 1/32nd and the shortest rest is a 1/16th. Then, I converted the file in NoteWorthy Composer, naming it Sonnerie.deSt.Genevieve.duMont.deParis.nwc (I used to avoid long file names like the plague, but I have become convinced that they have their place.), saving it in my *\Marais subdirectory. After extensive work on the file, during which time I made the following comments: "Langford does not like the sounds made by the chosen instruments, in NoteWorthy Composer, at least on his own system; he often changes those, merely to enhance playback. Other such modifications, such as the changing of the third clef to alto (and, at times, to bass), changing the direction of stems, and changing the tempo for a less-plodding effect than arrived in the (1/4-note = 104) file inherited from on 18/01/2001 from Johan Tufvesson, are in no way intended to be interpreted as authoritatively being at all related to the original score of this piece; or, to indicate that the piece should actually be performed at any given tempo. Such changes are made only to satisfy Langford's current needs and/or aesthetics", I formatted the file for potential printout, still in Composer, and copied in succession two pages (pages 1 and 9) from the preView mode, dumping them into my graphics program (Golden Software's Grapher2 for Windows). From there, I was able to create *.ps files. Those, in turn, were read into GhostView (authored by Russell Lang, Ghostgum Software Pty Ltd, ) and were converted to *.pdf format. Each resulting *.pdf file has been read successfully by Acrobat Reader v.3.0. I then wrote into zip file 20010118.zip 1. the original songen_m.mid file from Johan, [as Sonnerie.deSt.Genevieve.duMont.deParis.mid] 2. my derivative Sonnerie.deSt.Genevieve.duMont.deParis.nwc file, 3. each of the *.pdf files mentioned above: A. Sonnerie.deSt.Genevieve.duMont.deParis.Pg1of9.pdf and B. Sonnerie.deSt.Genevieve.duMont.deParis.Pg9of9.pdf and 4. this text, as file ReadMe.txt. [ NoteWorthy Composer ($39 [$US] shareware) and Player (freeware) are both available from , with which I am unaffiliated. File 20010118.zip was then uploaded to before this message was sent to two viol-related lists. ***** Please forgive me if, in my eagerness to reach a larger number of people, you have received two copies of this message. ***** --------------------------------- END ----------------------------------
